Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 13: Founder's Introspection

I've spent the last few days reviewing old blog entries, and I'm amazed at how far things have come along. At the same time; I can't believe how much has changed from my original vision, and a little overwhelmed at how much more there is to do. I confess that I at times get frustrated that my vision hasn't fully materialized. I've been at this since 2002, and have invested a great deal of time and money into bringing my vision into focus. My wife would tell you that over these last several month… Continue

Rosa G Turning Compassion into Action

This struck me as a powerful message. Bottom line, this organization is asking us all what can we do to make a difference. The caparison is made between what Father Damien did to help the lepers of Kalaupapa, Hawaii, and what we, ourselves, can do today to help alleviate AIDS, poverty and homelessness, etc. Take your compassion to action. Check it out. http://www.youtube.com/user/anawimdamien Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 12: The "People's Bailout" -- Full Disclosure

It's long overdue for me to post a new blog entry. I'd like to start by talking about our newly launched program titled, "The People's Bailout" (http://peoplesbailout.givewithoutgiving.org). The "People's Bailout" is a new and innovative ad-based real estate program designed to help struggling home owners, and at the same time help raise money for designated charities. Functionally it's very similar to a raffle, but we've been careful not… Continue

Sherry Wishes for Justin

I am a single mother of a terminally ill son who has a rare autoimmune and vascular disease called Wegeners Granulmomatosis and he is also in End Stage Renal/Kidney Failure. Justin is now 18 years old and his life expectancy left is unknown. His life consist of dialysis 3 times a week for the rest of his life or and if he can ever get a kidney (which is not an option right now). Both of these medical conditions are "silent killers" and a patients condition could change day to day. As a mother, i… Continue

Hayden Ehrenfeld hoodia

Real Hoodia is hard to find, despite all of the advertisements you can see online. The fact of the matter is, and most unbiased sources agree, that there is not enough real Hoodia Gordonii on the entire planet to fill all of the orders being placed for it. So people selling it have found ways to fill in the gaps between supply and demand for real Hoodia in order to turn maximum profits. One of these methods i

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 11: Building Awareness

We've had several new members join our community, and I first want to thank and welcome all of you. Each of us had a reason or goal in mind for joining GIVE. Many of you share a common affinity towards animals. Some of you have interests in serving those with special needs. Whatever your reason, I want GIVE to meet all your expectations. My personal goal is to grow our community and build awareness for each of your respective causes, but not cloud it with meaningless content such as you find on… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 10: Give Crumbs

This will be a short post, but a fun one. I just took my family on vacation through South Dakota and Wyoming. Of course my wife and son are both involved with GiveWithoutGiving.org, and both have their own GIVE page. My son (12-years old) told me if I gave him a stack of "GIVE Crumbs" (business cards), he would leave a trail of them at each place we visit. I thought his enthusiasm was great, so I of course supplied him with as many "GIVE Crumbs" as he needed. I often say that GIVE is a grass-roo… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 9: GIVE vs. CaringBridge.com

CaringBridge.com is a very good service, but it has some limitations when compared to GIVE. You can accomplish with a GIVE page everything you can with CaringBridge.com...and then some! GIVE is much more open and flexible. You have more personalization options, and can customize your GIVE page with standard HTML tags. You can't deny the popularity of CaringBridge.com, so it may make sense to leverage both GIVE and CaringBridge.com, such as we do with MySpace and Facebook. Did you know when you… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 8: startFEST

We had a great event at startFEST held at Union Station in Kansas City last evening. There were an estimated 150 attendees; many of which were corporate executives, private investors, and entrepreneurs of varying types. We had the opportunity to take the stage and present GiveWithoutGiving.org to the audience, and direct them to our booth. Traffic was good, and dialog was even better! My wife and I seemed to be in constant conversation with individuals showing interest in our program. Many of th… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 7: Moving Forward

Well…it's been a couple of months or more since my last blog entry, but it doesn't mean there hasn't been anything going on. Let me break this into three parts: 1) Refresher 2) What's new 3) What's to come. Refresher: GiveWithoutGiving.org “functionally” operates as a not-for-profit organization. What does this mean? We are operating as though we are a not-for-profit entity, but we have not completed our State filings (in process) to make it official on paper. Once this process is compl… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 6: A Reflection

I had a couple of hours to collect my thoughts on a flight from Washington D.C. back to my home in Kansas City today, and I decided it would be a good time to craft another blog entry and reflect back on GiveWithoutGiving.org. Much of what I wrote is repetitive to my previous blog entries, but I did include some additional detail I may have previously left out. If you haven't done so already, be sure to subscribe to my Founder's Blog so you get my updates when I post them. I've been building a… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 5: Partner Collaboration

It's been awhile since my last blog entry, but much has happened since my last post. As we continue to reach out to individuals and organizations to supplement their fundraising efforts, we've also been reaching out to potential partners to enhance our offering. Although GiveWithoutGiving.org’s virtual billboard program has been received extremely well, it has the potential to be even better when combined with other programs that compliment and philosophically share our same vision. This may be… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 4: Why Not?

There are several adjectives that describe GiveWithoutGiving.org's "One Block at a Time" program: * New * Unique * Revolutionary * Innovative A handful of folks have offered some candid feedback that in turn prompts this blog entry. I think the words above can be a little scary to some people. No one wants to be "first" or one of the "early adopters" of a new program. I think they would just as well see someone else try it for awhile before deciding to take the plunge themselves. Most people m… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 3: What is a "Virtual Billboard"?

Have you ever been cruising down the Interstate and seen one of those massive signs set off from the road that reads, "Advertise Here" -- it usually has a phone number at the bottom for you to call? Think of a "virtual billboard" as one of those gigantic signs you pass by while surfing on the "Information Super Highway". It's really the same thing with a few unique twists. The signs you see on the Interstate are very expensive, and usually reserved for just a single ad or message. Contrary to t… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 2: Explanation of Fees

These details are also available on the GiveWithoutGiving.org website, but I thought I'd take a stab at explaining the fees in my own words. Most commercial co-venturers retain 20% or more of earned revenues in a fundraising campaign. We're no different in that we retain a portion of the earned revenues, but we're only retaining 7%; hence 93% is left to the registered virtual billboard owner. Of the 7% we retain, the credit card processing fees chew up 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. This leaves a… Continue

Founder (Greg Unruh) Chapter 1: From the Beginning

Thank you for visiting my blog. I am the founder of GiveWithoutGiving.org and the GIVE social network, and I welcome the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. I live my life in chapters, so I thought it was appropriate to start this blog in the same manner. Let me give you a little background on GiveWithoutGiving.org. This all started several years ago when my Dad was diagnosed with a rare and malignant form of cancer on his lower spine known as a… Continue
